A patio is the cheapest square footage you will ever add to a house. It just has to be poured so it drains away from the building.
Most West Jordan homes were handed over with a 10x10 concrete pad off the back door and nothing else. That's a landing, not a patio — you can't fit a table, a grill, and chairs on it, so the backyard never really gets used.

The most common regret we hear is "we should have gone bigger." Working numbers we use when laying out a patio:
Slope, always away from the house. We pour a minimum 1/8" per foot fall away from the foundation. Flat patios pond, and ponded water against a foundation is how basements get wet and slabs settle.
An isolation joint at the house. The patio and the foundation move independently. Pouring a slab tight against a foundation wall with no isolation joint is how you crack both.
4" thickness, 5-6" under a hot tub. A filled six-person tub is over 5,000 lbs on a small footprint.
Sleeves and conduit before the pour. Gas line, low-voltage lighting, or a future outdoor kitchen — a $40 sleeve now beats saw-cutting a finished slab later.
